Zandra Shuck is a single mother who lives in Danville (Boyle County) with her two young children. Her children are ages one and two, and both have medical issues. Ms. Shuck was referred to SEEC's Transitioning to Independence for People (TIP) program in October of 2009 with a need to continue her Community Service placement, transportation issues, explore her options in furthering her education and to schedule a hearing and vision exam. She met with Laura Schwarz, the TIP Community Case Worker (CLC) and together they examined her needs and examined her options. Ms. Shuck discussed her desire to be a social worker and her lack of self esteem. The Community Liaison Worker took Ms. Shuck to an orientation at BCTC-Danville Campus in order to complete the application process and apply for Federal Student Aid. Together the CLC worker and Ms. Shuck enrolled the children in daycare and completed testing and scheduling at the college. The Community Liaison CaseWorker encouraged Ms. Shuck to complete her volunteer hours while focusing on her career goals and family. From SEEC donations, the CLC found an outfit for Ms. Shuck that she really liked; she liked it so much she wore it to meet with her advisor at college (CLC transported her there.) The CLC also requested that the beauty school in Nicholasville "donate" a makeover for one of the clients. The beauty school agreed to this arrangement and Ms. Shuck received highlights, a haircut, style, eyebrow wax and makeup application. Ms. Shuck was even able to donate the eight inches of her hair that was cut that day to persons who have cancer. Ms. Shuck wrote a thankyou letter to the school and commented that her self esteem had improved and that she felt more confident. The TIP program is focusing on Ms. Shuck's goals while helping a single mother to improve her self esteem.
