Sarah Willoughby's Story

Sarah Willoughby is a 24-year old mother of two young children from Clark County, who started services with SEEC's Transitioning to Independence for People (TIP) program in October of 2009. Ms Willoughby had just begun receiving K-TAP benefits in September due to complications with a pregnancy that caused her to have to leave her job. Ms. Willoughby was interested in getting involved in an educational program but was not sure what she wanted to do. She knew she wanted to find a short term program and was interested in the medical field. After researching her options with her TIP Community Liaison Caseworker, Karen Colbert, Ms Willoughby decided to enroll in an 18 week program at the Medical Institute of Kentucky to become a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant. Through much hard work and determination, Ms. Willoughby was able to begin classes at TMI in November of 2009, less than three months after her second child was born.  Ms. Willoughby has been very consistent in attending classes, studying on a daily basis, making good grades and continuing to provide for her children. She has also started the expungement process to clear old charges on her background check, which will be crucial once she completes her program in the Spring and begins looking for work as a Medical Assistant. Ms. Willoughby has shown focus and motivation in working with the Community Liaison Caseworker and states that she looks forward to "securing employment and no longer relying on K-TAP benefits".
