Do you have problems with staying on task at work? Time management problems? Do you have a disability but are unsure if you should disclose it to an employer?
If so, you may be one of the many individuals benefiting from The Competitive Edge: Learning Strategy Classes.
Students with or without learning difficulties face the same challenges in their academic and vocational choices. Whether it's vocational education, two-four year college, or employment after high school, certain skills are needed to be productive and successful. The student with learning difficulties is more likely to become discouraged, distracted, and overwhelmed by the new demands they are confronted with. Students with learning difficulties are intelligent. The challenge is not their intelligence, but how they use those learning differences to overcome barriers in the classroom and/or on the job. That's where "Competitive Edge" comes in. The goal for the one or two week camp is to equip each student with skills and foundational strategies to empower and build the confidence needed to succeed in his/her academic/vocational pursuits.
Strategy instruction is one of the most effective ways of improving academic and social performance for students with learning difficulties. Students will learn strategies to help them build on their strengths in dealing with challenges that impact their education, work, and personal, life.
The sessions will include presentations, discussions, and activities to promote learning. Some topics of discussion include, but are not limited to:
Failing to Plan vs. Planning to Fail (decision making, school or work)
Begin with the End in Mind (goal setting)
What's in Your Toolbox? (learning styles, interests, hobbies)
Who's in Your Network? (communication skills, advocacy, disclosure)
Are You UP for the Challenge? (organizational skills, problem solving, time and stress management)
What's in Your Wallet? (budget, financial planning)
The methodologies used are: discussion, field trips, guest speakers and video clips. Class participants should be 16 years of age or older.
